By the time they arrived at the lab, Ross’s car was already parked in the lot. The journey had been silent, Chrissy staring out of the window and refusing to engage with Cam who had given up trying to start a conversation and sung to eighties tunes all the way here. She didn’t wait for him when they pulled up, leaping out of the car and heading straight down the corridor to where she knew Diane’s mortuary slab awaited.

Cam was fast and caught her up before she pushed open the door. Ross and Diane were already inside, stood over the body of Charlotte Gillies. Her face was exposed but the rest of the girl was mercifully covered by a clean white sheet.

Ross smiled at Chrissy as she entered, his expression quickly turning to surprise as Cam followed her inside.

‘Cam,’ he said, his eyebrows raised. ‘I wasn’t expecting you.’

‘I was in the area and ran into Chrissy. She told me she was meeting you here, so I tagged along.’

‘Right,’ Ross said, eyeing Cam warily and clearly disbelieving his story.

Chrissy walked around to stand beside Diane, leaving Cam and Ross in some kind of testosterone fuelled stand-off. Leaning in, Diane whispered to Chrissy.

‘I’m pretty sure Cam is wearing the same clothes he had on yesterday. Anything you want to tell me Dr Ferguson?’

Chrissy’s cheeks flamed as she heard Diane giggle knowingly.

‘So, can we get on with this,’ Diane said, reaching over to pull on some latex gloves and throwing the sheet back to reveal all of Charlotte Gillies. ‘I’ve got a full load today so haven’t much time for chit chat.’

Chrissy was grateful to her for not dwelling on how she might have spent last night, but not so grateful for unveiling the full extent of Charlotte’s injuries. She swallowed hard, trying not to gag on the pungent, sickly-sweet odour that rose into the air with the removal of the sheet. The smell seemed more intense than usual, even Ross raising a hand to his face until he got used to the stench. Only Cam and Diane took it in their stride, Cam leaning in to get a better look at Charlotte’s corpse.

Diane looked as together and collected as ever, modelling medical scrubs with the style of a fashion icon. She had taken the braids out of her hair, the black strands smoothed and pulled back in a ponytail at the nape of her neck. Her face was bare of makeup, yet her skin radiated health. A soft pinkness tinged her cheeks, the result of the shift from the heat of the corridor to the coolness of the mortuary, that managed to look like skillfully applied blusher. Chrissy, on the other hand, was sweating from her brisk walk and was certain she looked more ‘blotchy mess’ than subtly flushed beauty model.

‘Charlotte Gillies, age fifteen. Cause of death, three stab wounds to the chest and neck. The first one pierced her carotid artery. She would have been dead in seconds. So, stabs two and three were overkill.
